Capital Seonbi turns the attention the other way. It reduces a complicated day to eight, and starts by establishing where you are before it says anything about where the world is. The people who read a shift early are almost always the ones who had themselves in hand first.
Part 1 laid out the eight, arranged as a day. Those eight exist outside you and inside you at the same time.
The world can be at noon while you are sitting in fog. The field outside can be empty while a lantern is burning in you. Eight outside crossed with eight inside gives sixty-four positions.
You don’t have to read all sixty-four
You don’t even have to memorize the eight. What am I looking at, where is my center, how am I standing — answer those and the position falls out. Noon, dusk, lantern, daybreak, wind, fog, stone, field. They all sit inside one ordinary day, so after a few passes they stop needing to be recalled.
What follows is a dictionary. Nobody reads a dictionary from the front. You open it when a word shows up that you don’t know, and that is exactly why it stays on the shelf for thirty years.
So it’s fine to walk past this now. On the day a decision won’t settle, on a week that is going badly, at two in the morning before something large — come back and open the one position you’re standing in. That’s the whole intended use.
